Varkala in Kerala reports death due to Scrub Typhus

On Wednesday evening, a 15-year-old girl died due to Scrub Typhus. The girl was admitted to the Parippally Medical College Hospital on June 3. Blood samples of the close relations and neighbors of the deceased were collected and sent for testing.

On June 1, the girl suffered a fever and vomiting and was sent to Vettoor PHC. On June 2, she was referred to Varkala taluk hospital, where she was discharged at night due to improvement in her health. She, on the other hand, fell while eating breakfast on June 3 and was transported to Parippally Medical College Hospital. Dr Santhosh G S, Superintendent of Parippally Medical College Hospital said that she tested positive for Scrub Typhus and was unconscious. Immediately she was put on the ventilator and later shifted to the ICU. He further said that the disease is not transmitted from one person to another.

Mrs. Veena George, the health minister of Kerala, expressed her condolences for the girls death and stated that steps had been done to eradicate the fleas that spread the virus. People have been warned to remain vigilant to avoid illness. (ETHealthWorld, June 10, 2022)
